Jets Will Reach Out To Billick

According to NFL Networks' Adam Scheffter, the Jets will go after Brian Billick. After Gang Green failed to woo Bill Cowher and were put on hold by Mike Shanahan this past week, Billick will be the latest big name coach the Jets will try to go after.

Scheffter did not report when the two parties will meet.

Billick won Super Bowl XXXV in his first season with the Ravens in 2000. Since that time, Billick kept the Ravens competitive year in and year out. The only problem was the fact that he was unable to develop quarterback Kyle Boller into a winner. The Ravens have since given up on Boller in favor of rookie Joe Flacco.

The Jets did conduct interviews with in-house candidates Brian Schottenheimer and Bill Callahan. Either one would be a very unpopular choice. Schottenheimer is hated by Jet fans for his lackluster playcalling, and Callahan is equally disliked after taking Jon Gruden's leftovers in Oakland to a Super Bowl loss in 2002, followed by two lousy seasons with the Raiders in 2003 and 2004. Callahan was also responsible for destroying the Nebraska University football team from 2005 - 2007 before he was kicked out.

Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants defensive coordinator, also interviewed with the Jets.

Interesting assesment of the current co-ordinator evaluations.

Billick is a talent and would likely "play well" with Tannenbaum and handle the noise of the big apple fish-bowl, plus have $5 million other considerations from a residual contract with the Ravens to factor in. As you say, the Boller development didnt happen. I wonder if Steve McNair was Billick's idea or management's. It did not pan out. So, it would be interesting hearing the discussion that they might have about the quarterback position during the interview. It would be interesting hearing how Billick evaluates Clemmons as well, though I doubt that would leak out.

Wonder if the Jets would take Billick over Shanahan IF Shanahan were actually interested.

I also wonder if Woody or Tannenbaum have a preference for any of the assistants to stay on, for continuity or whatever.
