Cohen's Corner 100th Post: Mets Beat Up Cards

METS 7
CARDINALS 2

The New York Mets continue to rock and roll in the month of July. Call a block party summer why don't you?

Behind another stellar performance by Mike Pelfrey, as well as the hot bats of Carlos Delgado, and Angenis Reyes, the Mets beat up the struggling St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 tonight at Shea Stadium.

Pelfrey continues to be the master of his domain. He went seven more strong innings, giving up one one run, while striking out five and walking none. There is not much you can say about Pelfrey, other than that he has clearly been the Mets ace for the last two months. He is completely in command of his pitches and is confident about what he brings to the table every fifth day.

As for the Mets offense, they continue to stay on the offensive. In the fourth inning, Fernando Tatis led off with a single and was later followed by a single by Brian Schnieder. Three batters later, Jose Reyes crushed a pitch to center field that fell in front of the wall; Reyes legged out the two-run tripple to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

Next in the fifth, with a runner on, Carlos Delgado delivered yet again; this time he blasted a two run jack to right field to give New York a 5-0 lead. The homerun was Delgado's 20th of the year, which leads the team.

Finally in the seventh, Argenis Reyes cracked his first major league homerun to right to give New York a 7-1 lead. It will be interesting to see what the Mets do with Reyes, since Louis Castillo is expected to come off the DL next week. The Mets should keep Reyes, since he has provided a steady bat, he's hitting .333, and is the best friend of short stop Jose Reyes. Castillo is old and crippled - get rid of him!

Still there was some drama. Duaner Sanchez, who has been just awful this season since coming off the DL in mid-April, loaded the bases with a walk and two singles, without recording an out. Pedro Feliciano had to come in to get one out, and then Aaron Heilman was brought in to face Ryan Ludwick and Albert Puljos. Heilman was able to get Ludwick to fly out to right in an intense 11 pitch at bat. He then got Puljos to ground out meekly to third base to end it for the Mets.

BTW. THIS IS COHEN'S CORNER's 100th career post since joining the bolgosphere world!! Thank you for reading!!!!
