Mets Escape With Victory

METS 9
PHILLIES 4

After losing John Maine to a sore elbow and Ryan Church due to dizziness, the Mets still found a way to beat up the rival Philadelphia Phillies, pulling even in the weekend series at one a piece with two to go.

With the Mets up 1-0 in the fourth, David Wright led things off with a double to right, then stole his ninth base of the year, catching lefty Jamie Moyer sleeping. Carlos Beltran walked, and later stole second; during the play, there was a throwing error by catcher Chris Coste, which allowed Wright to come in from third. In the next at bat, Damion Easley singled up the middle to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.

But things got wierd in the bottom of the fourth. First Shane Victorino got hit by a pitch with one out, and later stole second. Chase Utley then walked, as John Maine, who was cruising up to this point, was starting to get a little wild with his control.

Ryan Howard followed with a blast to left center to tie the game at three. As for Maine, he looked good, giving only the Howard hit, and three runs; however, in the sixth had to pulled because of a sore left elbow (His non-pitching arm). It is apparently nothing serious.

In the seventh, the unreliable Mets bullpen gave it up completely. First Joe Smith gave up a single to Pat Burrell, and later walked Geoff Jenkins. Manger Jerry Manuel had no choice but to put in Pedro Feliciano - who has been pretty unreliable lately. As expected, Feliciano gave up a single to Jayson Werth, to bring in Eric Bruntlett, who was pinch running for Burrell.

Still the Mets fought back. Boxscore.

In the eighth, with unreliable J.C. Romero and Tom "Flash" Gordon pitching for Philadlephia, Easley laced a single to center; Carlos Delgado then followed with a single of his own. Gordon then came into replace Romero, and completely chocked.

Gordon threw a wild pitch to allow Easley to come in to score the tying run. Marlon Anderson then walked; two batters later, Brian Schneider, pinch hitting for Feliciano, drilled a double into the right center gap, driving home Anderson and Delgado to give the Mets the lead.

The Mets added to it with three more in the ninth, which was followed by the Philly grounds crew putting on the tarp - making believe that rain was coming. Perhaps they were trying to stop the sharp timing of the Mets? Ya Think!?!?!?!

Tony Armas Jr. who won his first game of the year, making a start for the Mets earlier in the week at St. Louis, closed it out. The Mets are now four and a half games behind Philadelphia.
