METS 2
Earlier in the day, the Philadelphia Phillies lost 9-4 to the Florida Marlins, giving the Mets an opportunity to once again tie the Phillies for first place. All they had to do was beat the Reds and Josh Fogg with his 7.50 ERA.
Well, as baseball would have it...the Mets got blasted.
The Mets never took adavantage of their opportunities, and whenever the Reds gave them an inch, the Mets never took it.
Already up 1-0, the Reds tied it, when Ken Griffey Jr. doubled in Fogg from second base. This was a rough night for pitcher Oliver Perez, who was given two leads and reliquished both of them.
The Reds finally took the lead in the sixth when David Ross singled in Edwin Encarnacion to take a 3-2 lead.
The Mets had a chance to really do some damage in the top of the seventh. Nick Evan led off with a single, and was followed up by a single by Jose Reyes and a clutch single by Angenis Reyes to load them up for the big boys.
As a result, David Wright was caught looking at a nasty curveball for strike three on a 3-2 pitch. Minutes later Carlos Beltran was caught looking to end the inning and waste a huge opportunity.
The Reds then blew the door open in the bottom of the seventh, teeing off of Pedro Felicano. Jeff Keppinger, who has killed the Mets throughout the six games these two clubs have played this year, doubled to right center, after Carlos Beltran missplayed the ball, allowing the runner to score from first to make it 4-2.
The Mets then walked Brandon Phillips to get to Adam Dunn, and he made them pay with a single to right to bring in Keppinger. Finally, Joey Votto, who is having a marvelous first season, tripped to right filed, clearing the bases.
The Mets are still a game out of first, but only a half a game ahead of the Florida Marlins for second place. Photo above is of Joey Votto.
