Mets Lose Hold on 1st Place

MARLINS 7
METS 5

So much for good carma eh? The Mets good carma may be falling off, and maybe it is time for GM Omar Minaya to start considering trading for some top talent before 4:00 PM ET tomorrow, when the trade deadline ends.

Tonight the Mets dropped a crucial game to the Florida Marlins 7-5, losing the series 2-1 and putting the Mets a half a game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first in the NL East. The Marlins are just a game back of New York for second place.

This latest disaster saw Mike Pelfrey, who has been an ace in every sense of the word, finally have a bad night. It all felll apart for Pelfrey in the fourth, as Florida put up a five spot in the inning. Jorge Cantu singled to bring home Jeremy Hermida to tie the game at one. Later, Cody Ross, who has killed the Mets in this series, trippled to right field to drive home Cantu and Josh Willingham to give Florida a 3-1 lead. John Baker doubled in Ross to make it 4-1.Finally the pitcher Josh Johnson doubled home Baker to make it 5-1 FLA.

The Mets appeared to be dead in the proverbial water, until the Mets finally got to Johnson in the seventh inning. With two on base, Damion Easley blasted a three run shot to deep left field, high over the out of town scoreboard to get the Mets to within one, 5-4.

Still, it wasn't enough. In the eighth, Carlos Delgado came up to the plate an narrowly missed a game tying homer; hitting the ball to the warning track in center field.

Florida added insurence, as Dan Uggla, who has had an ugly series, hit a two run jack to deep left center to make it 7-4.

But, the Mets fought back. Marlon Anderson and Brian Schnieder both got on base with base hits. Then, Ramon Castro squeezed a single to third base to drive home Anderson to make it 7-5. However, in the end Jose Reyes skyed to left to end any hopes of a complete turn around.
