This time there was no comeback by the Mets; finally for the first time since July 4 the Mets lost a ball game, this time by a score of 5-2 to the Cincinnati Reds.
John Maine for the third striaght start was just awful, throwing tons of pitches and walking the ballpark. There must be something really bothering Maine, who earlier this month complained of arm stiffness. Maine walked five and gave up five runs on five hits in just four and two-thirds innings.
In the fifth Paul Bako singled with one out; then Maine walked Jay Bruce, and gave a single to Jeff Keppinger to load the bases. Ken Griffey Jr. walked to bring home a run to tie the game at two. Moments later Brandon Phillips singled to right to bring home Bruce and Keppinger to give Cincinnati a 4-2 lead. Finally Edwin Encarnacion was hit by a pitch to bring in Griffey, and that was it for the Maine and the Mets.
The Mets are no longer in first place now that Philadelphia won their game tonight against Florida.
