Rookie Wins It For Yankees

YANKEES 5
RED SOX 4

The Yankees badly needed a gritty, grind 'em out victory and they got it, thanks to rookie Brett Gardner, who won the game with a single up the middle in the 10th inning off of Red Sox closer Johnathon Papelbon.

The Yankees had to come from way back in this one, as Boston took a 3-1 in the fifth off of a shakey Joba Chamberlin.

Yet the Yankees battled back. Robinson Cano trippled off of reliver Javy Lopez in the sixth to drive in A-Rod and Jorge Posada to tie the game.

From there it was a stalemate until Gardner's heroics in the 10th.

Mariano Rivera got the win. In the ninth he struck out Manny Ramirez looking on three pitches, with a runner on third and two out in the top of the ninth.

A-Rod, who has had a bad week for personal reasons (Madonna, and divorce from his wife Cynthia) tied Mikey Mantel with 356 career homeruns. Boxscore.
