Just what the doctor ordered after a terrible collapse on Tuesday night for the New York Mets. With Johan Santana having a bad night on the mound, the Mets found a way to beat the Philadelphia Phillies and reclaim first place in the NL East.
Santana was off all night. In the first inning he gave up a lead-off single to Jimmy Rollins and allowed the pesky shortstop to steal second with two out in the inning. Ryan Howard took a Santana fastball into the left field stands to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.
Jayson Werth opened up the second inning with a homerun to deep left handing the Phillies a 3-1 lead.
It looked as if Santana would not last long, but he found a way to get through six innings without his best stuff on the mound.
Fast forward to the sixth, and Carlos Delgado delivered, hitting a solo homerun to deep right field to get the Mets to within one at 3-2.
Brian Stokes proceeded to hold the Phillies in the seventh, opening the door for the Mets to make some noise, and once again, Delgado was in the middle of it. Delgado lifted a pitch on the outside corner of the plate, and flicked it just over the wall near the left field foul pole to tie the game at three.
Brad Lidge had to come for Philadelphia and he got rocked around by the Mets. First Carlos Beltran singled and stole second. Ryan Chruch was intentionally walked to set up a double play with Dan Murphy coming up to the plate. Murphy lined a double into the right field corner to dive home Beltran. Brian Schnieder dropped a base hit over the head of Rollins, good enough to score Church and Murphy, giving the Mets a 6-3 lead.
Luis Ayala came into the ninth and shut the door, earning his second save of the year. The Mets are a half a game ahead of the Phillies for first in the division.
