YANKEES 15
ROYALS 6
It doesn't take long to begin the process of turning around a miserable season. A day after rookie Brett Gardner delieverd his second career walk-off hit to give the Yankees a comeback win over the Kansas City Royals, the Bronx Bombers bombed the Royals in a Sunday matinee at the Stadium.
Offensively the Yankees pounded out 17 hits; four players had more than two hits on the day, and three players had more than two RBI.
After Kansas City grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Yankees woke up from their long slumber to show the pesky Royals whose boss. A-Rod got it started with a three - run blast to left to tie the game. Next, the X-Man, Xavier Nady hit his seventh homer as a Yankee and 20th on the year, shooting one to right field to give the Yankees a sudden 4-3 lead.
Later in the inning, Jose Molina doubled home Robinson Cano, and Gardner continued to rake as he trippled to right to bring home Molina.
In the second with the bases loaded, Jason Giambi put the Yankees up for good, blasting a grand slam deep into the right field stands to give New York a 10-3 lead.
Finally in the seventh, Bobby Abreu doulbed home Derek Jeter to make it 12-3; A-Rod then drove home Abreu to make it 13-3 and Cody Ransom hit a two run shot to make it 15-3 Bombers.
Mike Mussina got the win, his 16th of the year. He went six innings giving up only three runs and striking out five. Mussina has a very good chance to win 20 games this year. The Yankees are creeping back into things as the Red Sox lost big to the Blue Jays, shrinking the Wild Card lead back to five games.
