PHILLIES 6
METS 2
With all the zaniness that surrounds the start of the NFL season, someone please pay attention to what is happening this weekend in Queens. No not the U.S. Open, in Shea stadium! The Mets have lost two straight to the rival Philadelphia Phillies and are in desperate need for a win tonight in game two of a day/night double-header.
The Mets got completely destroyed by the Phillies this afternoon, as Pedro Martinez gave up six runs on seven hits in just four innings of work. Not exactly impressive. Not exactly a pick-me-up after the Mets suffered a difficut 3-0 loss to Philadelphia on Friday night.
The disaster started in the second inning, when Martinez walked Jayson Werth with one out. He then gave up a double to Greg Dobbs to move Werth up to third. Moments later, Matt Stairs hit a sac. fly to right to bring home Werth to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead. It didn't end there. Carlos Ruiz then laced a single to right to drive home Dobbs and give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.
The Mets had no answers for Jamie Moyer, who at age 48 continues to defy age and his opponents. Moyer gave up only two hits in this contest. He lasted seven innings and only struck out one batter. With a guy who only throws about 82 MPH on his fastball, you would think the Mets would be patient, but that was not the case. The Mets never got anything going off of Moyer in the this ball game.
The Phillies put it away in the fourth as Ryan Howard doubled to center and Werth singled. Finally Dobbs blasted a three-run homer to right to give Philadelphia a 5-0 lead. Ruiz later doubled off the wall in center, and scored on a ground out by Moyer. 6-0 Philly.
That was all she wrote. The Mets now have to hope that Johan Santana can outduel Philly Ace Cole Hamels in the nightcap, if not than both the Phillies and Mets will be tied for first in the NL East with 20 to play.
