The pieces are falling into place for the Jets quarterback situation in 2018. After the club drafted Sam Darnold in the first round last week, the club released back-up quarterback Bryce Petty.
Petty, a fourth round pick of Mike Maccagnan back in 2015 never developed into a promising starting quarterback, when given the chance. He was 1-6 as a starter in seven games. His best opportunity to start came in the 2016 season, when he started four games down the stretch and won a game against the 49ers.
Still though he was betrayed by a horrible offensive line, and numerous injuries.
His inability to develop was partly the reason why the Jets invested a second round pick on Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg in 2016, but as we all know, Hackenberg turned into a bust himself and never played in a game. It's anyone's guess how long Hackenberg will remain on the roster.
With Darnold in the fold, the Jets have four quarterbacks: Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, Hackenberg and Darnold.
Hackenberg will likely get cut this summer as the team is expected to keep the two veterans to aid the development of Darnold.
Once the season kicks off in September, Josh McCown will be the starter, if healthy.
The Jets have no timetable for Darnold. Ideally they would like him to start the season on the bench to learn from McCown and Bridgwater. Chances are though fans will see Darnold in the later part of the 2018 season when the Jets are long out of playoff contention.
