April is over and the New York Mets are in first place in the National League East with a record of 17-9. Tell any Met fan in the middle of March, as they were digging out of Snowpocalypse 2018 that their team would be in first place, they would probably throw a shovel of snow in your face. Lets look back at the highs, lows and everything in between from the first month of the 2018 season.
Best Stretch: As mentioned previously, the Mets opened the season with a record of 11-1, which included a nine-game winning streak from April 3 to April 13. Included in that stretch was a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals down in D.C. The Mets blew out the Nats 8-2 in the opener of the series with Jay Bruce’s grand slam proving to be the apex moment of the game.
On Saturday April 7, the Mets relied on their bullpen to squeak out a 3-2 come-from-behind victory, and on Sunday, they stunned the Nats with a hard fought 6-5 win in 12 innings. The sweep of Washington catapulted the Mets into first place, and dropped Washington into an early season funk that they have yet to pull themselves out of.
Best Singular Moment: On Sunday April 15, Wilmer Flores sent the Citi Field faithful home rocking on a frigid afternoon with a game-winning solo home run against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mets held a 1-0 lead for a good portion of the game, before Mickey Callaway’s misuse of Noah Syndergaard and the bullpen coughed up the lead. As they did all month, the Mets came back. Brandon Nimmo tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth, before Flores went deep to win it.
