The Mets missed a major bullet Thursday morning when an MRI on Jacob deGrom's right elbow came back negative. There is no structural damage.
deGrom suffered a hyperextended elbow after swinging at strike three on a pitch in the bottom of the third inning of Wednesday night's loss to the Atlanta Braves. Oddly enough deGrom returned to pitch the top of the fourth, allowing only a base hit before exiting with four shutout innings.
The hope now is that deGrom will be ok to make he next scheduled start on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Mickey Callaway said deGrom will be monitored throughout the weekend to make sure there is no setback.
The Mets need deGrom back on the hill. The pitching staff is asunder right now as the Mets have stumbled out of the gate here in the month of May. Jason Vargas has been downright awful, Matt Harvey is no longer a starter, and Zach Wheeler, Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard have struggled to provide length this year. It has been a mess.
deGrom is by leaps and bounds this teams' best pitcher. He is 3-0 with 1.87 ERA, and has throw 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
