BREAKING NEWS: Mets Deal Jeurys Familia to Oakland A's

The New York Mets are sending closer Jeurys Familia to the Oakland A's. Although the deal is not officially complete.

The players coming back to the Mets we still do not know.

Speculation started to mount when the Mets decided not to put Familia into tonight's game against the Yankees by design. The Mets held a 7-5 lead and left Robert Gsellman in to finish the game, which he did. Familia never picked up a baseball, except for the one he was playing with on the bench.

Tim Peterson was the only reliever warming up to back up Gsellman in the ninth.

By the end of the game, both Andy Martino and Buster Olney were reporting that the Mets were working on a deal with the Athletics that would send Familia to the Bay Area.

The Mets trade of Jeurys Familia to Oakland might not be official until tomorrow -- and Wilmer Flores would remind you that a trade ain't done till it's done. But he's headed to A's barring snag

The A's are a surprising team in baseball this year. The A's are 21-6 since they were a game under .500 on June 15. That includes winning three of four in Houston against the World Champion Astros before the All Star Break. The great run has put the A's at 55-42, eight games out of first in the West, and three back of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card spot.

The A's believe that adding Familia to their bullpen can help get them over the top. It's kinda surprising that Oakland would be adding, because well, they usually are subtracting at this time of the year. Perhaps Billy Beane wants to finally do something in the postseason this time?

Familia is 4-4 with 17 saves in 40 games for the Mets this season. While he owns a 2.88 ERA this year, Familia has built a reputation as a closer who can be erratic at times. His most infamous moment came in the World Series back in 2015, when he served up a game winning homer to Alex Gordon as the Kansas City Royals beat the Mets in Game 1 of that series. One could argue that Game 1 loss was the turning point in that World Series.
