Yankees Getting Desperate for Starting Pitching

The Yankees starting pitching problems are not getting any better. Not after Domingo German got lit up by the light-hitting New York Mets on Friday.

German lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits before Aaron Boone pulled him for a bullpen by committee for the rest of the night. German failed to go more than four innings in five of his last six outings for Bombers, and has now been optioned to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes Barre.

The Yankees have called up Luis Cessa, who is not much better. Cessa owns only five wins and a ERA of 4.30.

If the Yankees want to get serious this season, if they believe that this team can win a World Series this year, they need to suck it up and trade for a starting pitcher.

The club has been linked to Jacob deGrom, J.A. Happ and Cole Hamels for a month. While Happ and Hamels would be marginal upgrades, and deGrom would be a phenomenal upgrade, the Yankees need a upgrade, regardless.

They need an answer. Outside of Luis Severino and his 14-2 record, the Yankees have nothing but questions marks in this rotation.

Masahiro Tanaka is 7-2, but he has pitched poorly in his first two starts off the disabled list. The Yankees hope that Tanaka can equal his postseason success from a year ago, but "Waiting for Gadot" is not going to do it for the Yankees.

CC Sabathia is old. Sonny Gray is all over the place.

If the Yankees have to give up Justice Sheffield, Miguel Andjuar and Clint Fraizer in a deal to get a starting pitcher that can help this team down the stretch and in a short series they need it. They need it badly.

Acquiring another starter would give Boone some flexibility, should the Yankees find themselves in a wild card game come early October, where they could use that starter in the game, and rest Severino for the division series if they advance.

As of right now, the Yankees would have no choice but to start Severino in that game against Seattle or Oakland. They need help. They need it now. Whether it is catching the Red Sox down the stretch, or winning the wild card, they need someone. Doing nothing is not an option.
