Landon Collins was not going to get the money he wanted from the Giants. So instead, the 25-year old safety inked a six-year, $84 million contract with the rival Washington Redskins.
Of that $84 million, $45 million will be guaranteed.
The Giants opted not to franchise tag Collins, who was a restricted free agent. There were rumblings that if he didn't get an extension from Big Blue he would hold out. A couple weeks ago there were reports that Collins cleaned out his locker in anticipation he would no longer be a member of the Giants.
The Giants received a lot of backlash for letting such a talented player go. While he had a down year in 2018, Collins is a three-time Pro Bowler and First Team All Pro safety. Known as a hard hitter and a ball hawk, Collins amassed 425 sacks and eight picks in his four seasons with the Giants. He was such an important piece, that it would have made sense for the Giants to keep him.
Instead, the Giants were unwilling to deal with a disgruntled player who they didn't want to pay. All of sudden the Giants are starting to sound like the Mets.
It remains to be seen what the Giants plans are moving forward. Clearly they want to rid the locker room of guys David Gettleman and Pat Shurmor don't feel fit their scheme. Doing so, while letting a player in his prime walk to a division rival is risky business. All of sudden Giants - Redskins has a little flare to it for next season.
