Sign Gio Gonzalez? Nope. Sign Adam Jones? No. Sign Dallas Keuchel? Yeah, no way.
The Mets have struck a deal with one-time Met Carlos Gomez. I know you can rise up a cheer.
Gomez, now 33-years old, last played for the Mets 12 years ago as a rookie outfielder in 2007. He was a scrappy little player, who showed some base stealing prowess, but ultimately his value to the Mets was as a trade piece. He was dealt in 2008 to the Twins for Johan Santana.
Then in 2015, Gomez almost returned to the Mets in a trade with the Brewers for Wilmer Flores. That trade fell through, but not before Flores learned about the deal and started crying on the field, thinking he was on his way to Milwaukee. The botched deal turned out to be a blessing for both Flores and the Mets, as the teary-eyed infielder hit a game winning homer the next day for the Mets.
As for Gomez, he has toiled around the majors, playing with the six different ball clubs. Last season he hit only .208 in 118 games with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Since the Mets already have an outfield chuck full of light hitting players like Juan Lagares and Keon Broxton, it is curious as to why the Mets felt the need to add another light hitting outfielder to the mix.
Clearly the Mets don't want to spend a lot of money to improve the team; that has been their Modus operandi.
Gomez doesn't help this team except add another body in camp. Since the Mets have already suffered key injuries to Jed Lowrie and Todd Fraizer, New York probably feels Gomez gives them some needed depth.
Beyond that the Gomez deal is not going to excite the fanbase. In fact it will only make the fans more irate.
