Vlad Jr. Impales Yankees for Third Straight Loss

BLUE JAYS 11 - YANKEES 7

Like they used to say about his father Vladimir Guerrero Sr. He's a bad Vlad!

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s three-run homer in the eighth sparked a four-run, eighth inning rally by the Toronto Blue Jays, who stunned the Yankees 11-7 at Rogers Center.

The Yankees were enjoying a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning after D.J. LeMahieu, who has been an absolute revelation for the Bronx Bombers, gave New York the lead on three-run shot of his own.

LeMahieu, who is now hitting .315 for the Yankees, also drove in the tying run on a single to center that tied the game a three back in the fifth.

Really, everything was going right offensively for New York.

In addition to LeMahieu, Gary Sanchez had a huge night. He went yard in the fourth inning to get the Yanks on the board, trailing 3-1, and later added an RBI single in the fifth to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

It just wasn't enough as James Paxton again struggled, and the bullpen had a rare horrid night.

In the bottom of the fifth, Guerrero reached on an error by third baseman Gio Urshella, which allowed Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to score from third to tie the game at four.

Paxton was done after that, pulled after four-and-two-thirds with the game knotted up.

Considering how well the Yankee pen has pitched of late, it looked it was game over once LeMahieu went deep. But that was a foolhardy notion.

With Jonathan Holder on the mound in the seventh inning, Guerrero reached on another error, this one by Gleyber Torres to open the inning. Two batters later, Holder hit Randal Grichuk with a pitch, setting the table for Teoscar Hernandez, who drove in both Guerrero and Grichuk with a RBI double to right to make it 7-6.

Then all hell broke lose for Zach Britton in the bottom of the eighth. A walked to Danny Jansen and a single by Gurriel set up shop for Guererro, who destroyed a Britton fastball, launching it to left-center for a three-run bomb to flip the score 9-7 in favor of the Blue Jays.

The homer broke the damn as Grichuk and Brandon Drury both followed with solo homers of their own to pad the Jays lead at 11-7.

The loss is not only the Yankees third in a row, but it snapped a string of nine straight series wins for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees try to avoid the sweep tomorrow.
