METS 4 - WHITE SOX 0
The New York Mets are sizzling! One day after keeping both Noah Syndergaard and Zach Wheeler in the fold once the Trade Deadline came and went, Wheeler delivered a gem in Chicago as the Mets extended their winning streak to a season high seven games.
Wheeler tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, walked none and struck out seven. It was easily his best start of the season, and certainly his best effort since a 10-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on June 22. Call it a nice reward to the Mets for keeping him around. Wheeler was involved in trade rumors for over a month. Rest assure, the free agent to be gets to remain with a team that is starting to gel at the right time of the year.
Wheeler's most impressive stretch came in the first five innings as he held the ChiSox to just two hits while protecting a delicate 1-0 lead. In fact Wheeler was tossing perfect baseball through the games opening three innings. The White Sox didn't get a hit off Wheeler until Jose Abreu reached on an infield single in the fourth inning.
Of the four hits that Wheeler surrounded on the afternoon, only one left the infield. That is domination.
And the Mets even got a Robinson Cano sighting in this contest. Cano led off the top of the second inning, crushing a fastball on 3-1 and planting over the left-center field wall to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
Much later in the top of the sixth Cano was at it again, this time lining a double to deep right, scoring Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.
Wilson Ramos, who has had his own share of struggles lined a single to center to cap the scoring at 4-0.
The Mets are now only two games under .500 at 53-55, and have pulled themselves right into the thick of the National League Wild Card race. They trail the Phillies, Cubs and Nationals who are all tied for the two Wild Card slots by only four games. That is it. And this was a Mets team that trailed by as many as seven games just a week ago.
The Mets head to Pittsburgh on Friday with Steven Matz getting the ball. On the horizon though, Marcus Stroman will make his Mets debut on Saturday night. Should be fun. The Mets have a very good chance at coming out of this upcoming series over .500 for the first time since May 23 when they were 24-23.
