YANKEES 14 - ORIOLES 2
It really isn't fair that the Yankees get the hapless Baltimore Orioles 19 times is it? Don't tell the Yankees that, because the Bronx Bombers love beating on the O's, especially at Camden Yards.
The Yankees clubbed five home runs in a 14-2 smackdown of the Orioles, sweeping the three game series as New York captured its eighth straight to improve to an astounding 75-39 on the season.
And like they have all season, it was the understudies that got the job done.
Gio Urshela, Cameron Maybin and Kyle Higashioka all contributed to the Yankees efforts Wednesday night combining for nine hits and nine RBI in the win.
In fact it was Higashioka's three-run blast in the top of the fourth inning that blew the game wide open at 4-0.
After the Orioles got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, the Yankees went right back to work in the sixth, plating five runs. DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge delivered RBI singles to open the scoring, before Urshela cracked a two-run shot to center to make it 10-1 Yanks. Brett Gardner's RBI Fielders Choice capped off the scoring in the frame, scoring Didi Gregorius.
But that was not all. Maybin and Higashioka went back-to-back to expand the Yankees lead to 14-1. The five homers the Yankees hit Wednesday gave the ball club 52 bombs against the Orioles this season, breaking a major league record. In fact, New York has 11 players with multi homer games against the Orioles this season, breaking a major league record of 10 set by the San Francisco Giants against the LA Dodgers in 1958.
The runs of course proved to be more than adequate for starter James Paxton, who got a much need rocking chair game. The lefty struck out seven Orioles, and held Baltimore to just a run on five hits over 6.2 innings. Paxton is now 7-6 on the season.
The Yankees take their offensive fireworks north of the border tomorrow for a four game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
