It was the moment Knicks fans have been waiting for for over a quarter century. The New York Knicks are back in the Eastern Conference Finals!
What a long, strange and frustrating road it has been for the Knicks and their legions of loyal supporters. From the infamous Isiah Thomas era, to one horrible draft pick after another. Antonio McDyess; Eddie Curry; the Carmelo Anthony's jealously over Linsanity; the inability of the Melo-led Knicks to get deep into the playoffs; Phil Jackson.
You name the person, the player, or even James Dolan himself, and Knicks fans just groan and roll their eyes in dismay and frustration.
But now those days are over.
The Knicks are the fever of New York. Fans poured into the streets in midtown Manhattan on Friday night, many of them durnk, many drunk on Knicks vibes; all of them feeling the same thing: utter joy that their is riding this high.
And it wasn't like Game 6 against the Boston Celtics was close at all; it wasn't. The Knicks led Boston 64-37 at the half; the game was virtually over. You could have flipped back to the Yankees spanking of the Mets on Friday, or maybe watched a movie and still tune in in time to see the final few seconds of the game as the Knicks celebrated a 119-81 triumph.
It was a coronation!
But as fans went bonkers in the streets of New York screaming obscenities, running in the streets and doing act that bordered on criminal-like behavior like the morons who were tossing garbage at a Indiana Pacers fan; there is more work to be done.
There is a lot more on the table for Jalen Brunson and the boys to get.
And the Pacers, a team that had the Knicks number last year stands in their way. Indiana beat up the Knicks physically last year in the East semifinals. Brunson, O.G. Anunoby, Julius Randle, and Mitchell Robinson all went down with injuries in that series.
The Knicks are healthier now; and their off-season trade of Randle to Minnesota for Karl Anthony Towns has worked very well thus far in the postseason. But that doesn't change the task at hand.
The Pacers are still a tough out. They beat up the Cavs last week in five games; and sent Gianias and the Bucks packing in Round One.
If Knicks fans want to keep bing-bonging their way to the Finals take heed that this will be a long, drag'em out series.
It will be as physical as the one the Knicks played against Detroit, if not more so, and it won't be easy.
Enjoy the ride. Basketball is king in the Big Apple once again.
