Phillies Sink Mets into Second Place in NL East

 There is a new team atop the National League Eastern division: the Philadelphia Phillies.

Despite blasting seven home runs on Saturday night in a much-needed victory, the New York Mets lost their grip of first place over the weekend, losing two of three to the Phillies, culminating in a dismal 7-1 loss on Sunday night.

The problem for the Mets on Sunday is the same problem that has persisted for well over a week: they don't have enough pitching. 



For as good as David Peterson has been this year, he ran into a red brick wall on Sunday night when the Phillies teed off on him for five runs over four innings of work. It was Peterson's shortest outing of the season, and the most runs he's allowed in a single game this year.

It's hard to get on Peterson when he's asked to be "the guy" on a team that doesn't have a true "Ace."

Over the last seven games, the Mets have a team ERA of 6.22. Griffin Canning, Clay Holmes, Paul Blackburn, and Blake Tidwell have all been shelled during this stretch.

It also doesn't help that Kodi Senga and Taylor Megill remain on the Injury List.

Sean Manaea, who is still a couple of starts away from returning, looked better in his second rehab outing on Friday, tossing 5-1/3 innings with seven strikeouts for Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets would love to have him back ASAP, considering Manaea was their go-to guy a year ago when he won 12 games and pitched to a 3.47 ERA.

As for Frankie Montas, who is also trying to bounce back from injury, he has been just awful in the minors. How does a 12.05 ERA and 2.14 WHIP over six rehab games in the minors sound? Ouch. The New York Post reports Montas could be returning to the Majors this week. That would appear to be desperation at this point.

In short ,the Mets need serious help.

It's great that Juan Soto has figured things out at the plate. His four-for-performance on Saturday, including two homers, was a masterclass. The man has been on fire in June, hitting .328 with seven homers and 14 RBI.

Surely with a sizzling Soto, and steady efforts out of Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Brandon Nimmo, the Mets will always have a puncher's chance. But they need pitching. And if they are going to contend with teams as good as the Philadelphia Phillies, they need pitching help now!

Francisco Lindor Remains Red Hot as Mets Top Phillies

 Francisco Lindor remains the hottest player in Queens right now.  The Mets shortstop blasted two more home runs, including a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth inning, Monday night to help propel the Mets to a 5-4 win over Philadelphia.   Lindor who typically struggles in the month of April is putting together a heck of a month. Monday's two hit effort was the 10th game in the last 11 where Lindor has recorded a hit. In fact in the month of April alone this year, Lindor was hitting at .311 coming into Monday's action.  On the year, Lindor is batting .284 with five homers and 13 RBI.  Lindor's efforts proved to be prophetic, as the Phillies Alec Bohm crushed a three-run bomb off Edwin Diaz in the top of the ninth to cut the Mets lead to a single run. Fortunately for New York, Diaz was able to shut the door with strikeouts of Trea Turner and Bryce Harper.  New York (16-7) has now won five in a row.

Mets Keep Rolling into Phillies Series

 The New York Mets are feeling pretty good about things right now!  The Amazin's swept a four game series from the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, winning 7-4 Sunday afternoon. It was the first time since 1986 that the Amazin's had swept such a series from St. Louis. We all know what happened later that season.    Well, not to get too far ahead of ourselves, because the 2025 version now faces a very stiff challenge. The Mets will face their arch rivals the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday with only two games separating the two teams in the NL East.  The Mets took out Philly in the NLDS last October, so this figures to be a heck of showdown. The Mets begin a month long stretch against teams that are likely postseason contenders like the Phillies, D-Backs, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers.  If the Mets (15-7) are this good, we will know for sure in a month.
