METS 6 - YANKEES 5
If there was ever a time for the Mets to get the most out of their lineup, this was the day.
Licking their wounds over over the lack of quality starting pitching depth, the Mets slugged their way to an impressive 6-5 victory over the struggling Yankees at Citi FIeld in a game fit for the 4th of July.
Having to rely on Justin Hagenman as its starter entering the second leg of the Subway Series, only to watch him serve up back-to-back homers to Jasson Dominguez and Aaron Judge, the Mets put on their hitting shoes and never stopped.
Juan Soto's two run bomb to shallow right tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, and really served as a cooling down moment for a Mets fans base that was probably gearing up for a long afternoon of watching their pitching staff be used as BP by the Yankees.
But instead, the tables turned. The Yankees, losers of four in a row coming having just gotten swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, instead brought in the staff that would get teed off on the most on this fourth of July.
Give credit to Hangenman, despite giving up three homers and four runs overall, he held the Yankees to just four runs in 4.1 innings. He didn't get shelled, and kept his team in the game.
With the Yankees leading 5-3 in the sixth inning, the Mets went to work. Brett Baty started things off with a solo shot to right off struggling Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton.
An inning later, Luke Weaver, who has really scuffled of late out of the Yankees pen got destroyed by the Mets. With two out, he walked Alonso, then served up a meatball to Jeff McNeil who launched a fastball into the upper deck of Citi Field for a two-run homer.
Just like that the Mets shot out in front 6-5.
With Edwin Diaz and Ryan Staneck both unavailable, the Mets turned to Reed Garrett who did a tremendous job over two innings, blanking the Yankees, and preventing Judge from getting another at bat.
Give credit to McNeil becuase his tremendous range at second on a line drive by D.J. LeMahieu, which saw McNeil range to his left, trap the ball, get up and throw a laser to first for an out solidified the victory.
The Mets (50-38) are feeling really good, while the Yankees (48-40) now slip to two games back of the Blue Jays.
