YANKEES 6 - METS 4
It wasn't pretty, but the New York Yankees will take it. They will take a 'W' anyway they can get it come to think of it. The Yanks snapped their six-game losing streak behind a 6-4 victory over the Mets at Citi Field on Sunday, although it was the relaxing afternoon they had hoped for.
The Mets had so many opportunities to turn the game in their favor, but they either A) couldn't get the big timely hit when they needed it the most, or B) got robbed on great defensive plays by Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, and C) saw home plate umpire John Bacon become the story.
More on that in a moment.
The Yankees staked Max Fried to a 5-0 lead thanks in major part to home runs by Austin Wells (solo shot in the first) and Aaron Judge (two-run blast in the fifth), but the Mets wouldn't go away. In fact, the Mets had Fried's number on Sunday, they just couldn't cash in with that big hit.
The Amazins knocked Fired out of the game after 5+ innings, one of his shortest outings of the year, tagging him with three runs on six hits.
In the fourth inning, Francisco Lindor lined a two-run single to center to cut the Yankees lead to 5-2. With Juan Soto and Pete Alonso coming up with one out and two runners aboard, the Mets had a chance to wreck the game. They didn't.
Soto struck out and Alonso flew out to end the inning.
Later, the Mets had the bases loaded in the sixth inning against Jonathan Loaisaga, but could only scratch out two runs on an infield single and and a double-play grounder.
The backbreaker came in the seventh when Soto hit a dying fly ball to left field that Cody Bellinger somehow got his glove under just before the ball touched the grass. Bellinger alertly threw the ball back to first base to double-up Lindor to get the Yankees out of trouble.
The final straw for the Mets came in the ninth when Luis Torrens struck out on three pitches. Two of those pitches looked way outside and low, but home plate umpire John Bacon called them strikes. Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza got tossed from the game, and understandably so.
In the end, the Yankees escaped Citi Field with a win to salvage a game in this Subway Series. For the Mets, a mini-missed opportunity for a sweep, but at the very least they got some mojo back in their season by winning the first two games of this series.
