It had to be seen to be believed. Mets closer Edwin Diaz sent Mets' fans through one of the wildest ninth inning sequences you will ever see, and still managed to lock down a save, and a 5-4 victory for the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
On a night where he clearly didn't have his best command, Diaz served up a lead-off single and walked a pair to load 'em up for Noelvi Marte. Diaz came back to strike him out swinging on a 3-2 slider that cut inside.
Then in the middle of his battle with Reds slugger Elly De La Cruz, Diaz stopped the proceedings because the cleat on his shoe broke. The blue shoes were quickly replaced with orange ones, and Diaz got back on the bump, and still found a away to get De La Cruz looking at a fastball down and low for strike three.
Finally, Diaz masterfully got out of trouble by jamming Gavin Lux into a grounder that Diaz fielded at first base on a great stop and throw by second baseman Luisangel Acuna.
