As a surprise to virtually nobody, Rutgers was no match for the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night as the number 8 ranked Ducks came away with a convincing 56-10 victory, sending Rutgers to its fourth consecutive loss.
The final score wasn't even indicative of the kind of performance Oregon put on display in Piscataway on Saturday night. Quarterback Dante Moore, who is considered one of the top prospects at the position for next spring's NFL draft threw for 290 yards on 15 completions and four touchdowns. That was good enough to keep with Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, who threw four scores and 332 yards in an Indiana victory over Michigan State.
Both quarterbacks are Heisman Trophy hopefuls, and both could go 1 and 2 in the draft next year.
Moore wasn't alone though. The Ducks gashed the Scarlet Knights for 415 yards on the ground, and 750 total yards. An effort that Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano called "disappointing."
"I’m very disappointed in those numbers. I would agree with you, 750 is a huge number. One that I’ve never, I can’t say I’ve never seen it, but I don’t remember it ever," Schiano said after the game.
Let's be fair, Rutgers had no answer for Oregon. The Scarlet Knights came in with a suspect defense, and it got exposed badly against a pro-style team like the Ducks.
Yes, Rutgers got the early fumble to bounce their way that they turned into three points, but it was all Oregon after that as the Ducks took a commanding 35-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Rutgers (3-4) will hit the road for Purdue and Illinois over the next two weeks. They need three more victories to become bowl eligible.
