BLUE JAYS 10 - YANKEES 1
Powered by home runs Vladimir Guererro Jr. and a pair of long balls by Alejando Kirk, the Toronto Blue Jays thumped the New York Yankees 10-1 in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday afternoon.
Riding the highs of Cam Schlittler's eight-inning gem on Thursday night, the Yankees looked toothless against Kevin Gausman and the Jays on Saturday.
New York managed only four hits against Gausman, as the Jays ace baffled the Yankees most of the afternoon.
Perhaps the turning point of this contest came in the top of the sixth inning, the Jays leading 2-0, when the Yankees loaded the bases. However Gausman fooled Aaron Judge on a change-up low and outside for a swinging strike three for the first out of the inning.
After Cody Bellinger walked on four pitches on four pitches, Ben Rice popped up to third base for out number two, and Giancarlo Stanton struck out to end the threat.
The Yankees never got close again.
The Jays meanwhile got all the offense they needed via the long ball. Vladimir Guerreo Jr. who entered the ALDS crushed his first home runs since September 5, when he launched a Luis Gil fastball over the left field wall for a 1-0 Toronto lead.
Alejandro Kirk followed an inning later with the first of two solo shots from the Jays catcher to make it 2-0.
Toronto blew the game open with eight runs combined between the seventh and eighth innings to take an insurmountable 10-1 lead.
Toronto leads the series 1-0. But if there is a silver lining here for the Yankees they will have a pitching advantage for the next three games. The Jays are beat up. Max Scherzer and Chris Bassist are not scheduled at the moment to start games in this series. Jose Berrios is on the IL. The Yankees will throw Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Cam Schlittler in the next three games.
