You can cross Bill Belichick off the list of potential candidates for the New York Giants' head coaching vacancy.
Belichick went scorched earth on the speculation, emphasizing his commitment to the University of North Carolina.
“I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families,” Belichick wrote. “The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade. However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.”
According to New York Daily News writer and NFL historian, Gary Meyers, there is a chance -- that Belichick may have burned his bridges with the Giants about 4-5 years ago.
It's been hard times for the Hall of Fame Head Coach, who couldn't land an NFL HC job after getting fired by the Patriots after 20-plus years in 2023. At the time there was speculation that the Atlanta Falcons wanted to hire him, but made an about-face, and hired Raheem Morris instead.
There was speculation at the time that Patriots owner Robert Kraft bad-mouthed about Belichick to Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
Since opting to take on the UNC job, it hasn't been any better for Belichick. For starters his 24-year old girl friend Jordan Hudson has turned the coach into a proverbial social media punching bag with all of her antics.
On top of that there was a story earlier this season that boosters and UNC supporters were fed up with Belichick, and there was talk that Belichick and the university were trying to come to an agreement on a buy-out. Belichick instead stressed back in October he was committed to the Tar Heels.
At the moment North Carolina is 4-5 having won two straight, and is struggling to stay in the bowl mix.
Belichick's announcement is a plea in many ways that he again is committed to the university.
In many ways it's good that the Giants stay out of the Belichick drama. There is too much of it, and the last thing Big Blue needs is to be right in the middle of this Belichick-UNC War. Let them deal with it.
The Giants have other and better candidates at this point who are worth interviewing. Two of them will be on full display tomorrow afternoon at MetLife with Interim Head Coach Mike Kafta leads the Giants up against the Packers and their defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Hafley, a New Jersey native, spoke glowingly about his memories growing up as a Giants fan this week. He might be an early favorite for the job.
