So much for the debut of Mike Kafka as Giants interim Head Coach. The Giants were still the same old G-Men (sorry Jets, you don't have a patent on the phrase 'same old'), as Big Blue dropped its fifth in a row 27-20 to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Yes, there were moments where it looked like the Giants might come away with the upset. They gave the Packers a run for their money, with Jamies Winston providing a necessary spark to the offense. Heck the Giants rolled up 336 yards on Jeff Hafley's defense, which at times didn't have any answers to slow down Big Blue.
Nope, the only ones stopping the Giants on Sunday were the Giants themselves.
Twice the G-Men had the lead, and twice, they watched it fritter away as Big Blue's defense had no answer for Jordan Love or even Malik Willis when the back-up came in for Love after the former left for concussion protocol.
But here were the Giants with a 20-19 lead thanks to Winston's one-yard plung that capped off an inspiring 15-play 85 yard drive that ate up half the fourth quarter. All Big Blue needed was a stop, and they couldn't get it.
Love answered with a seven play drive of his own, culminating in a 17-yard fade pattern to Christian Watson, who used all of his 6-foot-4 frame to leap over a pair of Giants for the touchdown grab to put Green Bay in front 27-20 with a little over three minutes to go.
The Giants did mount a comeback. Winston had the Giants within striking distance, but as has been commonplace in Winston's career he tossed a game-killing pick in the back-corner of the south end zone that iced it.
Another week, another loss for the Giants.
Is Mike Kafka the answer at Head Coach? Who knows it was one game, but it wasn't encouraging. Nor was it damning either.
The Giants are who they are, a 2-9 football team.
