If you believe all the leaks and reports that have been swirling over the past 48 hours it looks like Rams Defensive Coordinator Chris Shula and Colts Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo are the early favorites for the Giants Head Coaching job.
Regarding Anarumo many are connecting the dots because of the coach's relationship with Giants General Manager Joe Schoen. The two worked together with the Miami Dolphins back in 2017. In fact Ryan Dunleavey of the New York Post tweeted that Anaurmo is a slight favorite.
Anarumo, 59, has never been a head coach at any level, and he's been coaching football since 1989. If he were to attain the Giants job, he would be 60 come next season. It's not unusual for a Head Coach to attain his first job at such an advanced age; think Mike Zimmer with the Vikings. Zimmer was 58 when he took the Vikings job in 2014.Anarumo, a Staten Island native is certainly familiar with the Giants having worked on Pat Schurmur's staff in 2018.
As for Shula, he has been mentioned for some time since Brian Daboll's firing. It helps that the 39-year old is on Sean McVay's staff out in L.A. as Defensive Coordinator. As we all know, anyone associated with McVay gets immediate attention for a head coaching job. Zac Taylor and Kevin O'Connell come to mind.
Shula's Rams are first in the NFL in points allowed, giving up 16.3 points per game. They are also ninth in the league in total defense. Shula runs a 3-3-5 front, which starts off in a base 3-4, but is really a hybrid. Meaning his units are very flexible, and change creating plenty of confusion for opponents per play.
It will be fascinating if the Giants do decide to go the coordinator route again, especially after early reports indicated that New York prefers to go with someone experienced. Former Packers and Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy is the lone veteran with Head Coaching experience that is available.
Bill Belichick has stated he's not interested in the Giants job.
But there are reports from Joshina Anderson that a "longtime" head coach could be considering a change of scenery.
