Utility outfielder Trent Grishom will return to the Bronx next season after accepting a one-year qualifying offer from the New York Yankees, assuring New York keeps one of its more reliable veteran bats in the fold for 2026. Grishom is set to make $22 million this coming season.
Grishom enjoyed a career year, belting 34 homers, 74 RBI and 116 hits. He also set career bests in slugging percentage (.464) and OPS (.811). He could have easily parlayed that success into a bigger contract elsewhere, but the 28-year old wanted to be part of the Yankees regardless of contract.
It's a shrewd move for Grishom, who is essentially betting on himself to have another stand-out season while simultaneously competing on a team with a shot at a World Series ring.
Now the question is what happens with Cody Bellinger?
Bellinger enjoyed one of his finest offensive seasons, belting 29 homers and driving in 98 last year in the Bronx. He solidified the Yankees hole in right field after Juan Soto ditched them for the Mets last off-season. There was even a point last season where Bellinger was out-playing Soto in a head-to-head comparison between the two.
Ironically the Mets could also be in on Bellinger. The Mets have questions about their outfield, specifically center and left field. They are rumored to be dangling Brandon Nimmo in trade talks, and there is chance Bellinger could fit in, if the Mets really shake up the outfield.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yankees are the clear favorites to retain Bellinger, whose swing, he notes is perfect for Yankee Stadium.
Yet, don't discount the Mets to swoop in. The Phillies, and Bellinger's other two former employers: the Dodgers and Cubs could also be in the mix.
