The New York Mets roster purge continues as infielder Jeff McNeil is the latest to head out the door.
McNeil was traded Monday to the Las Vegas Athletics for infielder minor league righty Yordan Rodriguez. The Mets also sent the A's $7.5 million to cover the remaining $15 million on McNeil's 2026 deal. They also agreed to pay McNeil a $2 million buyout if the A's opt not to retain him for 2027.
So add McNeil to a list that includes: Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, Pete Alonso, and Tyler Rogers as members of the Mets who have all headed for the exits either via trade or free agency. While Mets owner Steve Cohen called people who misinterpreted the Mets payroll situation as idiots it is pretty clear that the Mets are in rebuild mode, even if they have two players (Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto) who together total over $93 million in annual salary.
McNeil's days were pretty much numbered when the Mets acquired Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers in the Nimmo trade. Semien, even though his offense has been on the decline is still a very good glove at second.
Meanwhile the club signed infielder Jorge Polanco to play first, but let's be honest his best position is second and short. He'll probably be more of a utility player.
As for McNeil he was one of the longest tenured Mets on the 2025 roster having spent eight years with the team. He was a batting champion in 2022 when he hit .326 with nine homers and 62 RBI. The scrappy McNeil was always kind of a underrated piece to the Mets puzzle over the years. He played in 923 games in a Mets uniform, and hit .283 with 80 career homers and 367 RBI.
The only real blemish on his stay in New York was the apparent poor relationship he had with Lindor. The two of them famously fought in the tunnel of the dugout back in 2021, with the two of them later, and awkwardly explaining it had to do with a dispute over raccoons and squirrels.
The two patched it up soon there after, but earlier this off-season, reports indicated that the two went at it during a June 20 game in Philadelphia.
