Free agent head coach John Harbaugh left the New York Giants on Wednesday without a formal contract complete, as the Giants couldn't keep the Super Bowl winning coach from "not leaving the building" as he headed back home to Baltimore to regroup and meet with the Tennessee Titans reps on Thursday.
Still reports are that both sides are still talking.
While a deal wasn't reached, it doesn't mean the Giants aren't viewed as the favorite to ultimately land the head coach. The Giants pulled out all the stops for Harbaugh leading up to their face-to-face meeting on Wednesday, and the all day affair included the coach meeting quarterback Jaxson Dart among others.
Again a formal deal was not complete, but reports throughout the day indicated that the Giants tried to get something finished as soon as last night.
Ian O'Connor of the New York Times reported Wednesday that Big Blue was willing to meet Harbaugh's demands, even if it means hitting close to the $20 million a year that Anddy Reid makes in Kansas City.
Still, Harbaugh, who hasn't been a free agent in two decades is taking his time and doing his due diligence. He will meet with the Titans and Falcons before coming to a decision, one would think, unless a dark horse like the Green Bay Packers come calling.
Ultimately the ball is in Harbaugh's court. If he wants to come to the Giants, he'll do so. But that doesn't mean the Titans and Falcons won't be interesting either. The Titans have a young quarterback and money to spend in free agency. The Falcons have an owner in Arthur Blank with deep pockets, even if they have a mystery on their hands at the quarterback position with an injured Michael Pennix.
The Giants though offer Harbaugh a chance to turn a Hall of Fame legacy into one of immortality. Winning in Baltimore is great. Win in New York? That's next level.
Stay tuned.
