What a wild 16 hours or so it has been for the New York Mets.
On Thursday night the Mets lost out on signing outfield free agent Kyle Tucker, who opted to take the Dodgers four-year $240 million deal which will pay him a record $60 million a year. The Mets had come in at a ridiculous $50 million, which was a lot for a guy who is a natural right fielder (the Mets already have a right fielder in Juan Soto). Tucker was also coming off of back-to-back injury plagued seasons.
It didn't help matters last night when owner Steve Cohen issued a cryptic tweet toward Mets fans asking them to let him know when they see "smoke" in reference to a Tucker signing. That Tweet didn't sit well with anyone. Then on Friday morning the Mets finally struck some gold. Hey even a squirrel finds a nut. The Amazin's signed free agent infielder Bo Bichette to a three-year $126 million deal with opt outs after the first and second year's of the deal.
The deal sounds eerily similar to the one Pete Alonso signed last year with the Mets, when he signed a three-year deal with opt-outs. He of course opted out at the end of the 2025 season and the Mets never bothered to pursue him again, as he signed a mega deal with the Orioles.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets are asking Bichette to play third base, a position he's never played before since he is a natural shortstop.
For a team that preached "run prevention" in the off-season, they sure won't field a team that will play solid defense on paper. Bichette a short stop will be a third; Jorge Polanco a second baseman will be at first. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos will be moving around the infield. Make sense of it as you will.
At the very least, Bichette is a very good hitter when healthy. He is a lifetime .294 hitter with 111 homers and 437 RBI. He hit .314 in 139 games. He suffered a knee injury last September that kept him out of the lineup for the Toronto Blue Jays until the World Series.
Bichette came up through the Blue Jays system along with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Injuries are nothing new for Bichette who has had a series of injuries that date back to 2020. Can he stay healthy for a full season with the Mets? We shall see. If he does and plays well, well the Mets are starring down the barrel of another opt out after one year.
