The New York Jets have narrowed down their wish list for offensive coordinator down to three names: Greg Roman, Darrel Bevell and Frank Reich, with Reich presumed to be the favorite for the job according to reports.
All three coaches should be familiar to NFL fans; they are all retreads, meaning they have been around the league with various teams.
Roman, who is known more for ultra-conservative game plans and running the ball has been around a long time. He's most commonly associated with the Baltimore Ravens, but also spent time with the 49ers, Chargers, Bills, Texans and Panthers. He's been doing this since 1995.
Bevell, who runs a little more of a friendly quarterback system, has been an O.C. with the Vikings, Seahawks, Lions, and Jaguars. He also served as interim head coach with both the Lions and Jaguars. The past four years he was the passing game coordinator with the Miami Dolphins.
Then there is Reich, who was supposedly retired before taking the Stanford Head Coaching job last year as a favor to his old quarterback with the Indianapolis Colts, Andrew Luck, who is Stanford's General Manager.
Reich is also an NFL lifer. He was a back-up quarterback with the Bills and Jets in the 90s, and rose through the coaching ranks. He was the O.C. with the Eagles Super Bowl team in 2017, but never called plays. He got a chance to call plays as Head Coach of the Colts and Panthers to very mixed results. He was fired by both the Colts and Panthers in-season.
The Jets are looking for a new O.C. after Aaron Glenn and the Jets tore apart the coaching staff in the last week. Tanner Engstrand was initially demoted, then mutually agreed to part ways with the Jets. He is now the passing game coordinator with Kevin Stefanski in Atlanta.
