Darren Mougy is wasting no time putting his plan into action to rebuild the New York Jets in his image.
The Jets shipped edge rusher Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans for defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat. The move relieves more than $13.4 million in cap space for the Jets, while reuniting the once popular Johnson with former Jets coach Robert Saleh who is now the Titans Head-man.
Tell me we won't get Jets-Titans in Week 1? It's just feels like we are going to get it.
Johnson was drafted by Saleh's Jets in the first round of the famed 2022 NFL Draft. Taken 26th overall, Johnson was supposed to join fellow '22 classmates Sauce Garder, Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall in turning the Jets around.
That never happened because the Jets quarterback situation was such an outright mess.
Johnson did some good in New York. He was a team player and leader. He wanted to be here, and spoke candidly last season about wanting to be part of the solution, but the facts are he wasn't the same coming off the Achilles injury that ended his 2024 season. He struggled to fit schematically into Aaron Glenn's system.
He's a good player when in the proper scheme for him. He recorded 7.5 sacks in 2023, earning Pro Bowl honors.
As for the player the Jets back in T'Vondre Sweat. He's cheap with a cap hit of only $1.6 million, and he fills a need at defensive tackle. He's also a good, young player. In two years in the NFL, Sweat has recorded 85 tackles, three sacks, and recovered a fumble. His most famous play was picking up a popped up ball in mid air and rumbling 30-yards downfield in a game against the Bengals.
He's got potential to be a solid player for the Jets.
Plus the Jets can now hone in on addressing edge rusher with their first round pick. Arvell Reese of Ohio State, Rueben Bain Jr. of Miami, FL, and David Bailey of Texas Tech are all top prospects at the position.
