As green and blue confetti spewed into the air at Levi's Stadium to celebrate the Seattle Seahawks 29-13 victory over the punchless New England Patriots in one of the worst Super Bowl game's ever played, the night belonged seemingly, and inexplicably to one man: Sam Darnold.

The former quarterback of the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, and Minnesota Vikings, had done the unthinkable. He won it all.
In one of the most bizarre seasons we have ever seen, it was fitting in a way that it had one of the most bizarre endings we've ever seen. And unironically, of the four former employers Darnold once played for, one in particular has drawn the ire of the national media and fans alike: the New York Jets.
If 2025 can be summed up succinctly it is this: "LOL Jets!"
Because ever since Seattle's 38-37 overtime victory over the L.A. Rams on a Thursday night in late December, it became more and more painfully obvious that this was going to be the Seahawks year. This was going to be Darnold's revenge tour, and if there was ever a chance to make the Jets a subplot, if not the narrative, this was it.
The Jets were a laughable 3-14 this past season. Aaron Glenn was on the proverbial hot seat following an 0-7 start after some pretty bold declarations a year ago when he said the Jets were "built for this shit." Well instead 2025 was nothing but pure shit for the Jets.
Add the Jets misery to the wild phenomenon that seemingly anyone previously associated with the Jets (Darnold in Seattle, Todd Bowles in Tampa, Robert Saleh in San Francisco, Devante Adams in L.A., Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh, heck even Leonard Taylor III blocked a field goal for the Patriots in the playoffs) were all having success.
Rodgers and Adams, ever so keenly aware of what was transpiring before them and on social media were snickering and laughing back at the Jets whenever they had a chance.
To his credit Darnold didn't take the bait. He could have blasted the Jets, he had every reason to. They gave up on him in 2021, trading him to Carolina in order to select Zach Wilson out of BYU. Ouch! Yeah, Ouch especially for the Jets.
So instead of Darnold taking potshots at the Jets, Jets fans decided to do it for him. I told you this was bizarre.
What's so bizarre about Darnold's Super Bowl run had nothing to do with Sam's play on the field, what's bizarre was the number of Jets fans on social media passionately rooting for him to win the Super Bowl to somehow justify their own deep personal hatred for Woody Johnson and the franchise they chose to root for.
Oh, and the New England Patriots were the Super Bowl opponent too, so why not, even though this version of the New England Patriots is a powder puff as compared to the Brady-Belichick behemoth it once was.
Just go onto Social Media and scroll through the number of Jets fans acting like this was a Super Bowl victory for themselves by proxy through Sam Darnold.
NYJMIke posted "Sam Darnold is one Super Bowl away from a very likely Hall of Fame bid."
Ok.
Harrison Glasser: "He came! He Saw! He Conquered!"
Really, 19 of 38 for barely 200 yards and a touchdown is conquering? OK.
Or how about BoyGreen25 who posted a video of Jets players chanting "And the Home of the Jets" and saying this is "Every Jets fan on the planet."
Oh my God, please stop!
It's truly bizarre and I have never seen anything like it when it comes to fan reaction to one single player. Darnold wasn't the only ex-jet to win a ring Sunday, but to these Jets fans he was.
On top of that we have a national media that loves this narrative. Dan Orlovsky called Darnold's win the greatest redemption story ever. If Darnold had never been drafted by the Jets, would "Greatest redemption story" still be the narrative?
Not taking anything away from Darnold. He deserved this moment of glory. He went through a personal hell to get here bouncing around from team to team. It took him a long time to get here, and when he thought he had found a home last year in Minnesota after guiding them to a 14-3 record, they pulled the rug out from under him much like the Jets and Panthers did before.
His story is not just beholden to just one team's misfortune the way some people want to keep spinning it, but is proof that we live in a league built off of impatience. If a quarterback, or a coach do not win within two to three years, they are cast away.
That's the way the NFL operates now.
It's a league of mercenaries.
Heck we just had 10 Head Coaching changes this past month.
Nobody wants to be patient anymore.
I am happy for Darnold. Happy for Leonard Williams. Happy for Jason Myers who kicked five field goals on Sunday night. But as a Jets fan I am not waving pom poms. This hurt.
In an alternate universe ... yeah I know ... oh well...
