So much for that 8-2 start to the season.
The New York Yankees are in the midst of an early season slump after taking their fifth straight loss in a 5-4 decision to the Rays in Tampa on Sunday. The loss obviously completed a three-game sweep for Tampa Bay, who suddenly swings into a three-way tie for first place in the AL East.
It's been that kind of week for the Yankees. Every single loss has been close, with four of the five consecutive losses decided by one run.
Despite Aaron Judge's two-run bomb in the ninth inning that cut the Rays lead to 5-4 it was not enough for a Yankees squad that managed five hits prior to the ninth inning, and were a measly 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Yankees offense has really been a problem of late. They are hitting .170 over their last seven games with only Ben Rice and Amed Rosario providing any consistent offense of late.
So even with a vaunted top of the rotation led by Max Fried and Cam Schlittler, it doesn't matter if the Yankees can't score runs for them. On Sunday, Schlittler allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. It just wasn't good enough.
If the Yankees want to find a silver lining in this slump it's the fact that they do face the Angels and Royals this week at home. Plus it's only April.
But the facts are this, fans are going to be rightly upset. Yes, it's early, and the AL East is not going anywhere right now, but the facts the Yankees returned practically the same roster as last season without any substantial changes from the team that got knocked out of the ALDS last October.
This is still a team that is home run or nothing, and it is still a team that scares its own fans more than opponents when it comes to playing games in the division.
Last season the Yankees were only two games over .500 against the AL East (27-25), while Toronto and Boston feasted on the Bronx Bombers.
A healthy and rejuvenated Rays team is bad news for the Bombers this season.
While the back of the baseball card says the Yankees should figure this out, and should still be a strong contender for the AL crown, it's moments like this that fans will point to and say 'see, this team is still very flawed.' And they would be right.
