One of the major contributors to the Knicks NBA Finals run this Spring will be back long term, with an eye at potentially repeating next season. Landry Shamet and the Knicks came to terms on a four-year $24 million deal a day before free agency opened up in the NBA.
This signing is HUGE for the Knicks. Shamet averaged six points per game in the playoffs and shot around 47.5 percent from downtown. He proved to be a valuable piece off the bench for the Knicks in the playoffs, and knocked down several important three-pointers during their run. In the Eastern Conference Finals, Shamet connected on 11-of-12 shots from beyond three.
Shamet is the second Knicks bench player to re-up with the team. The other being Jose Alvarado who resigned over the weekend.
The question is going to be what will the Knicks do with Mitchell Robinson. He is expected to hit free agency, and chances are he is going to cash in on a major contract.
Knicks owner James Dolan was adamant after the Finals that the team would try to remain under the second apron, which might be difficult to do with Robinson at this point.
If the Knicks really want to bring back Robinson and risk going above the apron, they would risk losing the taxpayer mid-level exception, and the ability to aggregate players salaries in trades. They would also risk seeing first round draft picks get frozen and moved to later in upcoming drafts.
That's a steep penalty to pay for the future of the team. Robinson was a key contributor, however. His big body gave Mike Brown an option off the bench to spell center Karl Anthony Towns. While Robinson struggles at the free throw line, his defensive prowess as huge in the Finals.
