There is a growing fear that Giancarlo Stanton's season could be over after the Yankees DH suffered a setback in his return from a right calf strain.
On Saturday before the Yankees-Blue Jays game at The Stadium, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Stanton suffered a moderate grade left calf strain after falling while running the bases.
"What that means moving forward, we're not ruling anything out," Boone said. "He'll obviously continue to work to try and get it right and hopefully be available. Obviously, we're at a point in the calendar where it gets challenging, but you also never know."
Stanton hasn't played in a Major League game since April 24. And if this left calf strain is anything like the right calf injury, we may not see Stanton again this year. At least it would be pushing it.
The 36-year old Stanton is on the books for $25 million next season, including a club option for 2028 with a $10 million buyout.
One has to think this could be the end of Stanton's topsy turvy run in Yankees pinstripes, but you never know.
Meanwhile Cody Bellinger, who has been out almost a month with a hamstring strain is expected back in the lineup on Sunday.
There is no timetable for Aaron Judge's return. Judge has been out since May 31 with a rib fracture just started to hit off a tee recently. He's still got a ways to go before his return. But the Yankees need him obviously.
As for Max Fried, the New York Post was reporting the other day that Fried could be out for the season as well after a recurrence of a bone bruise in his left elbow, but he was scheduled to throw off the mound today, and if all goes well he could start seeing live batters again.
Considering all their problems this year it's amazing the Yankees are still just three back of Tampa Bay for the lead in the AL East. The Yankees still maintain a four-game lead over Boston for the top wild card slot.
