Because it is time to move forward. Even though Favre had his best season in 2007, there is no guarentee that Favre can repeat that performance and take the Pack all the way back to the title game at age 39. There is always the chance that age can soon catch up to Favre and rob him of his gifts. Time is a funny thing.
Plus, the Packers have been working Aaron Rodgers out as the starting quaterback, and bringing back Favre will cause a rift in the clubhouse between Rodgers, his teammates and Favre. That is a formula that will not work for a team that wants to be a playoff team.
Also consider this. Lets say that Favre gets old in his 18th season, and Rodgers decides that he wants to be traded to a team that wants him. It delays the Packers progress with a new quaterback for another year, even two years.
Even if Rodgers doesn't throw for 4,000 yards, it doesn't mean the Packers can't win the division. Look who the quaterbacks are in the NFC North: Jon Kitna, Rex Grossman, and Tavaris Jackson. Not exactly players that make you shake in your boots.
The question remains, what team would take Favre if the Packers don't want him anymore?
1) N.Y. Jets - They have no quaterback, and Favre, even at 39, is better than Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. It would re-energize a cynical fanbase.
2) Baltimore Ravens - They have the defense, and with Favre, would finally balance their team, for the first time ever.
3) Buffalo Bills - They have a team full of tough players, and the additon of Favre would certainitly get them over the hump into the playoffs.
4) Jacksonville Jaguars - I am no fan of David Garrard, he is a decent quaterback, but not a winner. Favre on a Jaguar team with that defense, and Joey Porter and Mourice Jones - Drew on offense would make the Jags a serious Super Bowl contender.
That's just to name a few, but the decision is Favre's to make, and knowing him, this is a decision that will never be easy.
