After scoring 18 runs on Wednesday against Texas, the Yankees' bats went back into its proverbial hole Thursday night with a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the rival Boston Red Sox.
Andy Pettite was rocked and rolled by Red Sox hitters, giving up nine hits and six runs in just four and two-thirds innings. The Red Sox wasted no time in beating up the All Star pitcher, scoring two runs in the first with a Manny Ramirez ground out, and a Mike Lowell single in the first inning.
In the second young Jacoby Ellsbury doubled in both Jason Varitek and Coco Crisp to give Boston a 4-0 lead.
Jonahton Lester went the distance for the rare complete game shuttout. Lester, who threw a no hitter against Kansas City earlier this year, gave up only five hits and struck out eight.
Boxscore.
The Yankees are now a whopping eight whole games out of first place.
