If there is one thing that is positive in this confusing season for the New York Mets, it is the play of pitcher Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey, who had struggled for the past two seasons as a spot starter for the Mets, and even struggled at the beginning of this season, was proving to be a bust.
Pelfrey, who drafted by the Mets, ninth overall, in the 2005 draft, failed to live up to expectations of a first round pick. Some would criticize Pelfrey as being soft, or perhaps, the Mets as a team putting too much pressure on a 23 year - old kid.
Whatever the reason, that is in the past, and Pelfrey has finally turned the corner. He has won his last four starts, and is now 6-6 on the year with a ERA of 4.23 that is getting lower and lower with each start he makes.
He showed signs in a game against the Nationals in mid May when he had a no-hitter going through seven innings, but ended up losing the game 1-0 after giving up the no-no in the eighth. Pelfrey then struggled for his next two starts against LA and Florida, but since he has been great. Eight innings in a game the Mets would win vs. Arizona; five and two - thirds shut-out innings against Colorado, and a fabulous performance of guts against the Yankees last week.
Pelfrey has clearly arrived. Tonight against the Cardinals, Pelfrey threw another gem; this time going seven innings, allowing only one run against a potent Cardinal lineup. He even contributed with an RBI single in the third inning that gave the Mets a 5-0 lead. It was his first Major Leauge RBI.
He was dominating throughout the contest, blowing away each Cardinal hitter, as he struk out six batters. Even Albert Puljos couldn't touch Pelfrey, going 0 for 2.
Pelfrey has turned the corner, and it appears that he is well on his way to becoming the ace that the Mets thought he would be when the drafted him.
As for the rest of the Mets, Jose Reyes had a bases clearing tripple in the third to make it 8-0. Endy Chavez missed a two-run homerun by a few feet, settling for an RBI double in the Mets six run third. Carlos Delgado also stayed hot with a two run shot in the sixth inning to give the Mets an 11-0 lead. Boxscore.
