According to reports, Burress, at a Latin club late Friday night, had the gun on his belt and it accidentally fired, wounding him in the leg.
Antonio Pierce is also involved. He was with Burress during the incident and drove Burress to his Totowa home, where the two arranged medical treatment with New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, in the hope that they would not reveal any information to the media or police. The hospital complied apparently.
"Burress was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, which could result in a prison sentence of 3 1/2 years to 15 years if he is convicted. He was not required to enter a plea Monday and is due back in court on March 31. "(Long).
After listening to WFAN this afternoon, Mike Francessa said he heard a report that police went to Burress's home, but his wife threw them out. The cops came back with a warrant.
The entire incident from Burress and Pierce's antics at the hostpical ticked off N.Y.C. Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “I don’t think anybody should be exempt from that, and I think it would be an outrage if we didn’t prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, particularly people who live in the public domain, make their living because of their visibility—they’re the role models for our kids.
“It’s just an outrage that the hospital didn’t do what they were legally required to do,” said Bloomberg this morning.
As for Pierce, he refused to comment about his involvement in the situation on WFAN because of legal obligations.
It is not known whether Pierce could face charges as well.
