NATIONALS 0
Although this outing does not exactly make up for the past week, it certainly is a start for the New York Metropolitans who are desperate for wins right now.
Livan Hernandez continues his wonderfully surprising season, shutting down the Nationals offense for the second time in two weeks. Hernandez went seven innings of four hit ball, as well as inducing two double plays in the effort. Hernandez improves to 5-1 with a 3.88 ERA; clearly, he has become the second best pitcher on the Mets right now.
Offensively, the Mets got everything Hernandez needed in the first inning. After Alex Cora walked to lead off the ball game, Fernando Martinez doubled to left to drive in Cora, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Later, Martinez scored on a wild pitch by Nationals starter Chris Stammen to make it 2-0. Dan Murphy's single to left drove in David Wright to make it 3-0. Ryan Church doubled in his first game back from the disabled list to move Murphy to third, and Brian Schneider's sacrifice fly brought home Murphy to make it 4-0. Finally, Church came into score on another wild pitch by Stammen to give the Mets a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Mets improve to 30-25 to keep pace with the surging Philadelphia Phillies, whom they will face this week. Box Score.
