Calvin Pace Suspended First Four Games of the Year

Just when new Jets head coach Rex Ryan was preparing to enjoy his final three weeks of vacation before the 2009 NFL season begins July 31, huge news breaks out on one of his starting outside linebackers.

According to WFAN.com, Calvin Pace will be suspended the first four games of the year due to the possession of performance enhancing drugs. The suspension will begin on September 5 and will run until October 5. On that day, Pace can return to practice with the Jets.

This means Pace will miss a critical juncture in the Jets schedule. The team opens the 2009 season at Houston, followed by extremely difficult games against New England, Tennessee and New Orleans. If Pace can keep pace with his physical condition during that long time off, he should be able to play on October 12 when the Jets visit the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

"I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the league's guidelines," Pace said. "I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization, as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl."

Last season, Pace had 67 tackles, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries, including a touchdown against the Rams in a 47-3 victory.
