Yankees & Mets Make First Moves of Trade Deadline Period

With a little over a week to go before the trade deadline, the Yankees and Mets finally put their big toes into the water.  The Yankees came away with the third baseman they desperately needed, but not the one a lot of Yankees' fans wanted. The Yanks sent a pair of prospects to the Colorado Rockies for Ryan McMahon , a 30-year old third baseman who is under contract for 2 more years through 2027.  Ryan McMahon of the Rockies. Getty Images. McMahon is not exactly have a stellar campaign in Colorado. He is hitting only .217 with 16 homers and 35 RBI, but he is a fairly good fielder.  McMahon has only six errors to his name at third this season.  The Yankees were getting nothing out of the position. They released veteran D.J. LeMahieu a couple weeks ago, and Oswald Peraza (.141 average) has been dreadful at third.  Adding McMahon at least answers some questions.  The Yankees didn't get Eugenio Suarez , whom many fans wanted. Suarez has 36 homers this yea...

Jets' Justin Fields Back at Practice After Injury Scare

That's right folks, Justin Fields is back at Jets practice, one day after leaving the practice field with an apparent dislocated toe that sent Jets fans off a cliff.  On Friday Fields was seen running onto the field to take part in individual drills. He even ran toward the grandstands and took photos and signed autographs for a couple of smiling kids. "This is the number 1 Justin Fields fan in the world right here," he said about one young fan in the video that was shared by the New York Jets on X. Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million deal to become the Jets starting quarterback suffered the foot injury during Thursday morning's practice. Some reports indicated Fields might have had the foot stepped on. He got onto the cart and was taken inside to have it looked at. The Jets released a statement Thursday that Fields avoided serious injury and significant time missed.  It's not know how quickly Fields will ramp it back up.  The good news is he won...

Jets' Justin Fields Suffers Toe Dislocation

It doesn't take much for Jets fans to lose their collective minds. They are an abused bunch. Years upon years upon decades of misery, misfortunate and Charlie Brown kicking the football like shenanigans have followed them for seemingly forever.  Jets Justin Fields during OTAs.  So when initial word came down that starting quarterback Justin Fields left practice on a cart, it didn't take long for fans to have flashbacks to Aaron Rodgers getting carted off the field two years ago with an Achilles tear, or Vinny Testaverde pounding the Giants Stadium turf after tearing his Achilles back in 1999. Or how about the various Chad Pennington injuries? Or Mark Sanchez getting TKO'd in the fourth quarter of a preseason game? Yes, Jets fans have seen it all. Reports indicate Fields suffered a right toe dislocation . There is no fracture, and the injury is not to the big toe, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. There were even reports/belief that Fields had his fo...

New York Giants Begin 2025 Camp Under Intense Pressure

It's been a couple of years, but there is a buzz around the New York Giants as training camp begins this week in East Rutherford. An off-season full of activity, General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll pushed all their chips to the center of the proverbial table to get this team back on track, and perhaps save their jobs in the process. Will it be enough, especially in an NFC East that is home to the world champion Philadelphia Eagles and the ever-improving Washington Commanders? Here are some storylines to follow: Russell Wilson with the Giants. Getty Images.  Quarterback battle : All eyes will be on what happens under center for the Giants this summer and all season long. Why? Because it could be musical chairs this year with plenty of star power. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston both signed with Big Blue with eyes on the starting quarterback job. Just based on resume, it would figure that Wilson will be the starter Week 1 at Washington, but ...

Bills Bringing Back Red Helmets vs. Jets

The Buffalo Bills are the latest in a long line of teams that are going to throw it back to (depending on your preference) better threads when the bring back their classic red helmets for the final home game at Orchard Park in Week 18.  The Bills will throw it back to the 90s in 2025. Getty Images.  The Bills haven't had a red helmet since the 2010 season when they ditched their millennium-navy uniforms for their current royal-blue and white uniforms that they have worn ever since. While the charging Bill logo remains the same, Buffalo has donned a white helmet since 2011.  That all changes a bit in Week 18 against the New York Jets.  The Bills will wear the red helmet with their current blue home jersey, which in my humble opinion is great, because the 90s Bills jerseys looked too much like the New York Giants jersey's during that era.  Other teams that have joined the list of throwing it back of late include:  The Bucs who brought back their road-wh...

Errors by Volpe and Peraza Cost Yanks Against Jays

The pressure on the New York Yankees was ratcheted up last night as the Toronto Blue Jays took full advantage of a pair of Yankees' errors en route to a 4-1 victory, and a four game lead in the AL East. Talk about pressure. The Bronx Bombers carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, Monday, when the game totally imploded. The Blue Jays celebrate another win over the Yankees. Getty Images.  It all started when Carlos Rodon walked Yankee-killer George Springer to lead things off. Vladimir Gurrero Jr. followed with a single, and Bo Bichette doubled, driving in both runners to give Toronto a 2-1 lead. It only got worse from there as a throwing error by third baseman Oswald Peraza on a grounder by Myles Straw, allowed Bichette to score. A batter later, Straw scored on a throwing error by shortstop Anthony Volpe when he couldn't properly field a ground ball by Leo Jimenez. Volpe's tough season was only compounded by an 0-for-3 at the plate. His average now at ...

Yankees Face Season Defining Series in Toronto

Yes, the calendar reads "July 21," but for the New York Yankees this could be the most critical week of the season when the Bronx Bombers head back up to Toronto to face the Blue Jays for three games beginning on Monday. The last time the Yanks were up north three weeks ago, the Jays swept the Yankees four straight, rubbing their faces in it with each defeat as the standings in the AL East totally flipped. Suddenly the Yankees, who had been cruising along atop the division for three months found themselves trailing the Blue Jays. When the two teams meet again, the Jays will hold a three-game lead for first. If the Yankees sweep the Jays, both teams will be once again tied atop the division. If the Jays take two of three, their lead in the division will be four games. George Springer has owned the Yanks. Mets Need Help & Wins Ahead of Tough Schedule

The New York Mets season is hanging on by a thread. That is not hyperbole; it's a fact. Just look at the Mets schedule and the standings in both the NL East and the NL Wild Card race. The Mets still trail the Philadelphia Phillies by only a 1/2 game in the East, but are barely holding onto the second wild card with San Diego, San Francisco, and Cincinnati all bearing down. The Mets' wild card chances took a severe hit over the weekend when they lost two-of-three to the Reds at Citi Field. The issue? The same that have plagued the Mets all season: not enough pitching, and not enough timely hitting. On Friday, the Mets bullpen imploded after Sean Manaea gave the Mets four solid innings of one-run ball. On Saturday, Clay Holmes couldn't find the strike zone. Meanwhile, the Mets hit only .212 in the three-game series, with Francisco Lindor producing an 0-for-14 effort. Juan Soto went 1-for-11, and Pete Alonso 1-for-10. Alonso also didn't start Sunday due to a brui...

David Wright: The Face, Captain of the Early 21st Century New York Mets

When baseball historians look back at the first quarter century of the New York Mets, David Wright is going to play a prominent role.  While Wright never won a World Series ring in New York, and the one time the Mets got to the Fall Classic in 2015, he was starting to deal the severe back and neck problems that would end his career, it doesn't diminish his impact.  When he was called up in 2004, Wright was looked upon as the heir apparent, if you will, to Mike Piazza's place at the heart of the Mets order at that time. Soon Wright became more than that, the face of a franchise.  While the Mets had other great players around him like Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, Wright best represented the complete story of the Mets in the early part of the 21st Century.  He came up at the end of the Piazza-era in 2004. Became a household name when the Mets got good again in 2006; got to a World Series after years of struggle, and retired a Met at the dawn of a new era in Mets...

Yankees Edge out Mets in Wild Subway Finish

YANKEES 6 - METS 4  It wasn't pretty, but the New York Yankees will take it. They will take a 'W' anyway they can get it come to think of it.  The Yanks snapped their six-game losing streak behind a 6-4 victory over the Mets at Citi Field on Sunday, although it was the relaxing afternoon they had hoped for.  The Mets had so many opportunities to turn the game in their favor, but they either A) couldn't get the big timely hit when they needed it the most, or B) got robbed on great defensive plays by Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, and C) saw home plate umpire John Bacon become the story.   More on that in a moment.    The Yankees staked Max Fried to a 5-0 lead thanks in major part to home runs by Austin Wells (solo shot in the first) and Aaron Judge (two-run blast in the fifth), but the Mets wouldn't go away. In fact, the Mets had Fried's number on Sunday, they just couldn't cash in with that big hit.  The Amazins knocked Fired out of th...

Alonso Powers Mets over Yankees with Pair of Home Runs

METS 12 - YANKEES 6  Picking up right where they left on the Fourth of July, the Mets out-slugged the New York Yankees 12-6 on Saturday afternoon, in a huge statement victory as the Amazin's took a series win, and assured at least a split of the season series.  As for the Yankees, they continue to struggle, now losers of six in a row, and have fallen to three-games out of first place.  Pete Alonso celebrates with teammates. Getty Images.   It didn't take long for the Mets to make their statement when Brandon Nimmo launched a 1-2 slider from Carlos Rodon over the right field wall for a grand slam homer to stake the Mets to a 4-0 lead.  For Rodon, who enjoyed a stellar start to his 2025 season, had the worst outing of his season thus far, allowing six earned runs over five innings. His ERA ballooning to 3.30. The Yankees have now lost Rodon's last three outings.  As for the Mets they got exactly what they needed from starter Frankie Montas. The ex-Yanke...

McNeil Leads Mets to Flying Start over Yankees

METS 6 - YANKEES 5  If there was ever a time for the Mets to get the most out of their lineup, this was the day.  Licking their wounds over over the lack of quality starting pitching depth, the Mets slugged their way to an impressive 6-5 victory over the struggling Yankees at Citi FIeld in a game fit for the 4th of July.  Having to rely on Justin Hagenman as its starter entering the second leg of the Subway Series, only to watch him serve up back-to-back homers to Jasson Dominguez and Aaron Judge, the Mets put on their hitting shoes and never stopped.    Juan Soto's two run bomb to shallow right tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, and really served as a cooling down moment for a Mets fans base that was probably gearing up for a long afternoon of watching their pitching staff be used as BP by the Yankees.  But instead, the tables turned. The Yankees, losers of four in a row coming having just gotten swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, instead b...

Knicks Find Next Head Coach (FINALLY) in Mike Brown

The New York Knicks have found their next head coach, and to really nobody's surprise it will be former Cavs and Kings Head man, Mike Brown. Brown takes over for Tom Thibodeau, who was ousted at the end of the Knicks' postseason run to the Eastern Conference Finals. Thibodeau had coached the Knicks for five years, amassing 226 victories, and was responsible for turning around a once moribund franchise.    Brown was one of four known candidates to interview for the job, including former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins and New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego. There were reports that the Knicks had also kicked the tires on South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley. Before settling on Brown, the Knicks were also said to be in hot pursuit of ex-Nets superstar Jason Kidd, who has become a very good head coach in his own right, and coached Knicks star Jalen Brunson in Dallas. But the Mavericks would not let Kidd interview . Whi...
