Omar Minaya should stop trying to prove that he was right in not trading for bullpen and outfield up, by calling up David Murphy, one of the pieces that he would not trade, because this much is clear: this bullpen for the New York Metropolitians absolutley SUCKS!!!! Maybe Omar should have made a trade? Ya think!?!?!?!?!
With a 4-1 lead going into the eighth, after Johan Santana pitched well for six and a third innings, the Mets pen once again blew it for their ace, preventing from earning his 10th win of the year. The Mets are a putrid 12-11 .522 when Santana pitches in a game for the Mets this year.
The Mets jumped out early, when Murphy got his first major leauge single to open up the second inning. A batter and a pitch later, Damion Easley lifted the first pitch by Roy Oswalt in the left field seats above the scoreboard wall to make it 2-0 Mets.
In the third Carlos Beltran batting in the second hole in the batting order drove home Jose Reyes with a single to right to make it 3-0, and Carlos Delgado hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Seemed like enough for Santana who put forth a yoeman effort, getting people out without his best stuff. The seeming turning point was when Murphy caught a line drive off of the bat of ex-Met Ty Wigginton and then threw it to Easley to record the out for the double play to end the seventh. It seemed like New York was on their way.
Then it fell apart.
Scott Schoenwies surrendered a homerun to ex-Met and most hated man in New York, Kaz Matsui to make it 4-2. Then in the ninth Billy Wagner completely imploded. He gave up a double to Mark Loretta and a single to Hunter Pence before an out was recorded. Wagner then walked Brad Ausmus to load them up, and Geoff Blum singled up the middle. Both Loretta and Pence scored at the same time; slamming and crashing into catcher Ramon Castro, knocking him out of the game, and tying it at four.
Finally in the tenth, Aaron Heilman walked Lance Berkman and allowed Carlos Lee to reach on a single. He was removed for Pedro Felicano, who loaded the bases with a walk of Pence. Finally, Darin Erstad hit a fly ball to left that Fernando Tatis got a late break on, but still managed to make a terrific diving catch, but Berkman was able to score and win the game for the Astros.
The Mets are now in third place, two back of Philadelphia, and a game back of Florida. What a mess for the Mets.
