MARLINS 6
Finally the Mets have played a complete game in the month of August. Dispite the fact that the Mets had to pitch the pathetic Brian Stokes, in place of the injured Johne Maine, the Mets found a way to beat up the Florida Marlins and take the second game of the series, with a chance to sweep the Marlins tomorrow afternoon.
The Mets got it going early and often, as Carlos Beltran. Yes Carlos Beltran, finally woke up out of his long summer slump, doubling to left to drive home David Wright and Nick Evans to give the Mets an early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, the other Carlos, Carlos Delgado homered again, this one a two run jack to bring home Beltran to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.
However, Stokes could not hold the lead. In the Florida third, Jorge Cantu blasted a two run homerun to get Florida to within two. After that, Stokes setteled in for the most part, going into the sixth with a 4-2 lead. But, the Marlins found a way to tie it, as former Met Mike Jacobs hit a two run jack into the Met bullpen to tie the game at four.
The Mets came right back, and chased out starter Scott Olsen from the contest. Robinson Cancel grounded to second for the sacrifice to drive home Fernando Tatis to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. Later, Dan Murphy, who continues to wave a magic stick, blasted his first homerun as a major leauger; this one to the oppisite field to give the Mets a 7-4 lead. Finally Beltran, who went 3 for 3 on the night, hit his first homerun in 82 at bats, his 16th of the year, and first since early July, to give New York a 8-4 lead.
But, the Marlins came back again. Joe Smith got roughed up for two runs in the eighth, to bring Florida back into it, as Jacobs doubled to left to bring home Josh Willingham. Later, Wes Helms drove in Jacobs with a single to right center.
Aaron Hielman came into the ninth and pitched extremely well for the second straight night, earning his second save of the year. The Mets are now a game behind Philadelphia for first in the NL East.
