That is what Omar Minaya and owners Fred and Jeff Wilpon tried to pull on Angles closer Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who notched an MLB record 62 saves in 2008, is demanding a five year $75 million contract from any potential suiter. The Mets were believed to be the favorite to get K-Rod, but the Mets found a way to drop the ball. They offered Rodriguez an insulting two year $25 million contract. This would have been an nice deal for a closer who is 38 or 39 years old, but not for someone who is still in his mid 20's, not even close to the prime of his career.
Rodriguez reportedly left his Las Vegas meeting with Minaya unimpressed by the Mets and their offer. So, it's logical to conclude that the Mets can forget about getting K-Rod; first impressions are a lasting thing you know. Instead they will try to focus on getting either Brian Fuentes, who is not even close to being as good a closer as Rodriguez, or Trevor Hoffman, who has made a career of being a poor man's Armando Benitez, blowing one big game after another.
Congratulations, Mets; you found a way to screw it up once again!
